Join 2021 Berkshire Artist-in-Residence, Ellie Spangler, in a talk exploring her artistic process while she developed new works in residence at the Red Lion Inn.

About Ellie Spangler

Ellie currently teaches studio art at Miss Hall's School in Pittsfield, MA. She continues to research the life and work of Hilma through traveling to see her shows, reading her writings, and staying in touch with Ulrika. Ellie draws inspiration for her art from her daily life which includes caring for her five year old daughter, supporting her students' artistic pursuits, walking in the woods, and practicing meditation.

"In 2016, I travelled to Sweden to research the artist, Hilma af Klint. I wanted to know what inspired her to work abstractly and what inspires abstract women artists in Sweden today. From my research in Stockholm, I began to shift my own practice to focus entirely on meditation and working intuitively. During my visit, I connected with Hilma’s relative, Ulrika, and my research took an unexpected turn. Ulrika encouraged me to connect with their family medium. My conversations with the medium included instructions from Hilma about improving my practice and how to connect better to my inner voice. My experience and research has brought me new confidence and freedom that I have applied directly to my art making.”

About the Berkshire Artist Residency

The heart of the Berkshire Artist Residency is to give local visual artists the opportunity to create new work inspired by their home county. IS183 Art School recognizes the important outlet and invaluable opportunity an artist residency provides. Our tailored program gives visual artists exclusive access to world class cultural facilities and historic landmarks to develop new work that intertwines with the fabric of our county. This program is supported in part by a grant from the Stockbridge Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency. The Summer 2021 program takes place between May 31st and October 11th. Selected artists receive access to the buildings and grounds of their site and support for the development, creation, and exhibition of their work. Each residency closes with a reception and exhibition of the artist’s work.

Online with IS183 Art School

We offer virtual opportunities to work with talented IS183 Faculty Artists, bringing the studio experience to you - through classes, private lessons, and events!

How It Works

Register on our website and a staff member will email you a Zoom meeting link along with instructions. Simply use the link to join the online class at the designated time! Download the Zoom app on your smartphone or tablet, or use your laptop/desktop web browser. The web browser client will download automatically when you join your first Zoom meeting. (Have a look at this Zoom overview.)

You will join a live, interactive lesson or talk presented in real-time by an IS183 Faculty Artist. Small class sizes will allow you to engage personally with the instructor and other students, just like in the studio! Faculty lessons will primarily be demonstration-based, but may have segments in which students are challenged to work on independent assignments. Each class and faculty approach will be unique!

Thank you for continuing to make art and support IS183 Art School! We look forward to seeing you in the (virtual) studios!
