First Fridays Artswalk, November 2019

  • Brothership Gallery Window 141 North Street Pittsfield, MA, 01201 United States (map)

Faculty Artist Thaddeus Kubis will be showing the images he has capture of Coney Island this month. The Artswalk takes place from 5–8pm on Friday, November 1.

Situated to the south of Brooklyn, New York, Coney Island is 4 miles of fun, sun and nearly everything in between. When the Dutch arrived, they called this strip of land, Konijn Island or in old archaic English “island of rabbits.” Today we know this peninsula of rabbits as “Coney Island.” This strip of land, highly active in the summer, offers a different visual condition during the off-season. I captured some images using an array of media, including digital, film, and infra-red film.

The ten images included within this exhibit are a cross-section of Coney Island during the high season, summer, and the spring and fall.

From the image of the empty but beautiful Boardwalk, the seagull high in the sky, the two practical uses of an umbrella, and eclectic captures of key attractions (including Tillie, a caricature of the first owner of Steeplechase Park, George C. Tilyou), Coney Island offers fun in the sun and, for some, contemplation, perhaps a location to share life’s negative moments.

My link to Coney Island is simple, I was born and raised in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. My family travelled by car and subway to Coney Island for summer fun, much in the way that residents of Massachusetts flock to the Cape.

Magical memories, new visuals, a variety of interactions, impacting the five senses — enjoy your mini vacation to Coney Island, island of rabbits.
