Drawing, Collage, and Transfers with Encaustics

This class is designed as an introduction to hot wax encaustic painting with a multi media approach that will cover both abstract and representational ways of working. Using hot plates, heats guns and gas torches, we will create beautifully lustrous works of art with solvent-free materials. Beginning very abstractly, we will use colored waxes and pigment sticks to get a sense of layering, working with color and movement made through heat applications. Clear wax techniques will provide an opportunity to play with drawing, collage and working with transfers. Other topics that will be covered are using stencils, scratching and incising techniques, and embedding found objects into the surface. Demonstrations will discuss surface preparations, painting techniques, do’s and don’ts, and proper use of equipment and tools. Take 10% off this class if you finalize your registration 3 or more weeks before the start date.
